Where are the Corkers and who the heck are they?

Yes where and who the heck are The Corkers. Well it's not a long story. Who are we? We are a small group of retired teachers.

Last fall when my friend and I attended the retirement ceremony of one of our friends, she mentioned that she and a friend(previously retired) had planned to meet on the beach on the first day of school and toast her retirement. My friend and I thought that sounded cool. We were retired too, me in 2008 and my friend in 2009. Well it was decided we would all meet.

Over the summer travel and all kinds of things kept us busy, but on the first day of school, we were ready to meet.

Today is the first day of school and my friend Wally and I headed for the beach rendezvous as planned with Lynda(the new retiree) and Karen (the not so new retiree). When we arrived our group had grown by two already. Geri had retired last June as well and had been asked along. Iris another recent retiree was also there. So we were six.

Down to the beach we went and champagne flutes in hand at 9:00 am we lifted our glasses in our toast to: To Hell with the Bell.

We took pics(which I'll post here) and laughed an awful lot. We also met many others who congratulated us all on our retirements.

When the champagne was done we packed back into our cars and drove to Karen's beautiful apartment where we were treated to a wonderful brunch. Then it was more fun and conversation.

We all love books and traded titles. We all love the theatre, travel, and good food. So we have lots in common.

So that's the story of The Corkers, but the Corkers, why you may ask such a name. Well popping those champagne corks was such a fun thing that I guess we just decided to be Corkers. We also decided that it would be a great Retired Teachers Sports Day Event. Who can pop their cork the farthest. Along with Who can paint their toenails while sitting in the sand and not get sand on them. Another favourite was who can tell the difference between Brad Pitt and Sean Connery at 50 feet, without your glasses!

So here's to the Corkers!
